Aspen, Colorado – July 25, 2017 – The City of Aspen is pleased to announce it has hired Cory Vander Veen as its new Director of Recreation. He comes to Aspen after serving two years as the Assistant Director of Parks and Recreation in Brownsville, TX. His other experience includes serving as the Facility and Events Manager for Jorgensen Ice Complex in Gunnison as well as the Aquatics Manager for the Gunnison Community Center. He also worked for Apex Parks and Recreation for 4 years on the front range.
Vander Veen will oversee the direction of Aspen’s recreational operations and facilities, including program development and supervision of recreation personnel as well as providing policy direction to council and staff, budget development and business plan creation. The facilities he will manage include the ARC, Red Brick, Ice Garden, and the Lewis Ice Arena.
“I’m thrilled to continue my career with the City of Aspen,” said Director of Recreation Cory Vander Veen. “I look forward to working with the community, the ARC Advisory Committee, City Council, and my team members to continue to build on the excellent services we provide. I have been in Parks and Recreation for over 13 years, beginning as a junior lifeguard and immediately knew that I would pursue a career in Parks and Recreation. My passion for this industry has led me to many great opportunities including developing expertise in ice, pools, and athletics. I look forward to providing the best possible services to our community members.”
Vander Veen is succeeding Tim Anderson who retired in May after 25 years working as the Recreation Director.
Parks and Recreation Manager Jeff Woods says, “We’re excited to have Cory join our team. He brings a lot of experience managing over 250 employees and an $8 million budget. As a Colorado native, he also understands our culture and what makes recreation unique here.”
Vander Veen earned a Bachelor’s of Arts from Western State Colorado University in Outdoor Leadership and Resort Management and Business Administration. His salary is $91,000.
