Aspen, Colorado – April 14, 2014 – The City of Aspen is beginning road and sidewalk construction at the Gondola Plaza intersection on Monday, April 21.  The work is meant to improve pedestrian and motorist safety, enhance ADA access and promote stormwater quality.  The intersection at E. Durant Ave. and S. Hunter St. will be closed for the duration of the work, which is estimated to run through the first week of June.  Construction will take place Monday through Friday with an occasional Saturday.  Advanced warning signs will alert motorists on Hunter and Durant a block before the closure.  The following RFTA bus routes will be re-routed to accommodate construction: RFTA inbound buses, Hunter Creek, Mountain Valley Dial-A-Ride and Burlingame/Hwy 82.

Crews will provide pedestrian and traffic control measures while the work is completed.  A full closure of the intersection was determined to be the most effective method for maintaining a safe work environment and providing the highest quality finished product for the community.

Highlights of the improvements include:

·       Raised intersection creating a visual connection between Gondola Plaza and Hunter Street Corridor

·       Bulb-out expansions to each corner and Gondola Plaza to improve sight disturbances and shorten pedestrian crossing distances

·       Rain Gardens at bulb-outs to promote “green” stormwater management of runoff

·       Brick paving and colored concrete bands to carry pavement character of Gondola Plaza throughout intersection and create a pedestrian friendly area
