Aspen, CO – November 4, 2013– Pitkin County and the City of Aspen invite the public to come celebrate America Recycles Day at the Rio Grande Recycling Center on Friday, November 15, 2013.  We are joining thousands of local organizers nationwide holding recycling events dedicated to promoting and celebrating recycling in the United States. In addition to answering questions and providing assistance in waste reduction efforts, the County and City waste outreach staff will be hosting a clinic on how to convert old skis and snowboards into a bench.

Schedule of events:

•           10 am – 2 pm – Free educational materials on waste reduction through recycling, composting, and reuse.  Free equipment for curbside composting will be distributed.

•           10:30 am – 1:30 pm – Free clinic by Dagoberto Canas, Pitkin County Recycling Technician, demonstrating how he converts old skis and snowboards into a bench.  Canas will answer questions and provide suggestions about how to do a similar project at home.  Please come with questions and enthusiasm but due to site and time constraints your own ski bench project will have to be constructed off site. If you are interested in participating in the clinic, please register by contacting  or

This year’s America Recycles Day theme, “I Want To Be Recycled,” will help to educate people about the importance of recycling to our economy and environmental well-being as well as motivate occasional recyclers to become everyday recyclers. The national recycling rate is currently at 34.7 percent. Recycling 75% of the nation’s waste would create nearly 1.5 million jobs by 2030, according to a report by the Tellus Institute with Sound Resource Management. Since its inception in 1997, communities across the country have participated in America Recycles Day to educate, promote environmental citizenship, and encourage action. Learn more at
