Aspen, Colorado – June 1, 2017 – The City of Aspen is pleased to announce it has promoted Austin Weiss from Open Space and Natural Resource Manager to Director of Parks and Open Space. Weiss has worked for the Parks Department for 16 years. He started his career as the Trails Coordinator. The responsibilities he now takes on include general supervision over parks operations, open space and natural resources, planning and construction, the mechanics, and the office. “I’m thrilled to continue my work with the Aspen Parks Department in this new role,” Weiss said. “I believe the parks system is one of the City’s greatest asset and I consider it an honor to help lead the stewardship of this department. I’m excited to continue the great work of the Parks Department and to ensure the Aspen community has the continued opportunity to access world-class parks, trails, and open space. After all, that’s one of the main reasons we have all chosen Aspen as our home.” Weiss is succeeding Tom Rubel who is retiring after 35 years with the City, the last three of which he served as the Parks and Open Space Director. Parks and Recreation Manager Jeff Woods says, “We’re proud of the work Austin has done over the years. He has a clear vision for the parks department, where it’s been and where it’s going. A major project on the horizon is selecting the leases for Cozy Point and Austin has been instrumental in overseeing the future of one of the City’s most significant open space parcels.” Weiss’ promotion is effective immediately. He will work alongside Rubel for several weeks to facilitate a smooth transition. Weiss earned a Bachelor’s of Arts from Prescott College in Outdoor Education. He also serves as Vice Chairman of the Cross Country Ski Areas Association board of directors. ###
