Geothermal

A preliminary feasibility study shows the potential for using geothermal resources for clean, affordable energy is promising in Aspen. Researchers believe temperatures in the 90-100-degree range are likely at this location, which would make it possible for the City to utilize the geothermal energy for heating. This test well project will determine if these assumptions are correct.

Current Geothermal Project Status

The City of Aspen is using this test well to conduct underground testing to see if there is potential to utilize geothermal energy. The test well is in the gravel parking lot next to Prockter Open Space. This is just a test site and will help determine if the potential of using geothermal resources for heating exists in this area. In the fall of 2011, phase one of the project reached 1,000 feet and though hot water has not yet been reached, our experts believe it is within 500 feet or less.

Phase two of the project will take place between April 15th and May 27th 2013. The size of the site and appearance will essentially be the same as in phase one. The maximum depth for this project will be 1,500 feet whether or not hot water is reached. Construction hours for the project will be 7:30am-5:30pm Monday-Friday and 9:00am-5:00pm on Saturdays.

The City greatly appreciates the patience and support of the neighbors and community during this project. If you have questions or comments about the project, please contact Lauren McDonell at (970) 429-1831 or lauren.mcdonell@cityofaspen.com.
