This contest was brought to you by the City of Aspen, Pitkin County,
ACES, and Edible Aspen as a way to increase the amount of locally-grown food and prove
that bountiful food gardens can be grown right here in Aspen.
Businesses, homeowners, landscapers, and all others in the Aspen area were invited to participate. On August 5th, a walking tour was held to showcase the winning gardens in downtown Aspen.
Be sure to pick up a copy of fall edition which features a highlight on the garden tour and the winning residential and business gardens in Aspen.
Several wonderful gardens participated in this competition! To see highlights of the participating gardens, (Photo credit: Lisa Houston, Edible Aspen; and Laura Armstrong, City of Aspen).
Gardens were judged on the following:
- creativity of planting location (walkway, hanging planters, window garden box, etc.)
- variety of planting types
- low water use
- beauty or artistry
- ability to produce one full recipe from the garden
- for business category only: incorporation into business (example: herbs grown on site are used in the restaurant's kitchen)
A big thanks to all participants in the first ever Aspen Area Vegetable Garden Competition for supporting local food in Aspen!
