Clean Water

Pollution in the Roaring Fork River is caused by stormwater runoff (which is rainfall and snowmelt) from the City.

The main pollutant of concern in Aspen is sediment.  Other pollutants attach to sediment including pet waste, fertilizers, metals, and oil and grease.  This picture shows sediment-laden runoff from snowmelt.

The Jennie Adair Stormwater Quality Project is comprised of underground sediment removal vaults and engineered wetlands (shown here).  This project has helped to remove over 140 tons of sediment from stormwater runoff.

With the voter’s approval of Referendum 2b in November 2007, the City has been able to hire a stormwater manager and is establishing a comprehensive stormwater management program. With continued support from citizens and visitors, we will not only work to meet the goals of the Clean River Initiative,  but will establish the City of Aspen as a leader in stormwater management and water quality programs across the country.
