Welcome to Community Development
Community Development includes the Planning and Zoning and Building Departments. Planning and Zoning handles current planning, long range planning, special projects, and Land Use Code enforcement. The Building Department reviews construction plans and performs construction inspections to assure compliance with building code and other official City of Aspen Ordinances.
2016 Development Moratorium
In early 2016, City Council approved a temporary moratorium on certain development in the City of Aspen. Throughout 2016 City staff performed extensive consultation with the public and City Boards to draft changes to the Land Use Code and bring it in line with the Aspen Area Community Plan.
On January 23-24, 2017 City Council passed Ordinances 29, 30, 32, and 33 approving changes to commercial use mix, parking and mobility, and commercial design. On January 30, 2017 City Council passed Ordinance 31 approving changes to the Growth Management Quota System. All Ordinances take effect 30 days from approval.
